I often wondered if the Shinders brand had survived, if eventually they would have found a way to open at the Mall of America–but I also actually highly doubt it, given the rent costs, the lack of an Old Country Buffet nearby, and a suspicion that that the Mall of America would not have allowed some of Shinders highest margin products be for sale in a family venue. If memory serves, there may have been a comic book shop at MOA for a little bit of time–but if there was, it didn’t last. And that’s honestly my biggest concern with CardVault by Tom Brady–will it be able to last. I stopped by the store in early January, and it was definitely busy–busy enough that I had to use some special Photoshop magic to remove some people walking by in the photo I took–but this was also before school started back up after holiday break, and the store was pretty new.
With the number of Minnesota card shops now open in the area, and the provincial nature of most Minnesotans (and the fact that a lot of locals really don’t go to the Mall of America), I wonder if the location will struggle more than a lot of their other locations around the country. The store is nice–it’s small, but clean, and not over packed with product–but I also noticed a lack of any hockey cards (unless I was just blind), which is unusual for a Minnesota card shop, and seems like it might be a bit of a miss. I’m obviously not cheering for them to fail–but I will be curious to see how well they do compared to some other local card shops.
