Shinder’s or Shinders? That is the Question…

One thing I’ve noticed in going through a lot of Shinders related images, videos and more is that there has been (at least at times) some inconsistency in the brand name, with both Shinder’s and Shinders being used as the name of the company.

Most of the time, it’s Shinders without the apostrophe–especially when related to signage outside of the stores (although it may have originally been called Shinder Bros.), and also on the logo that was originally used on the website. Shinders main location on 8th & Hennepin five years after the chain closed.

However, if you look at the old bags, the button that was sold to someone I met on a Facebook group last year and this old receipt that someone posted on Reddit last year–it was very clearly Shinder’s with the apostrophe.  When I created the logo for this version of Shinders.com, I originally used a tracing of the SHINDER’S from the bag, which I then colored red to better match the signage I remember from stores–I would have gone with a variation of the old website logo, but haven’t been able to find a clean enough copy to utilize to create something (yet).  The great article written about the iconic brand last July also used Shinder’s, which also may have been logical since the family that founded the company was named Shinder, not Shinders.

Still, the lack of consistency is somewhat surprising–although I assume maybe the lack of the apostrophe on the store signs had to do with difficulty (and cost) of adding the special character in lights/neon? Eventually I can hopefully find a copy of some old corporate documentation that would solve once and for all whether it really was Shinder’s or Shinders–in the meantime, for the time being, I’ve switched the logo on this site (since it’s SHINDERS.com) to the no apostrophe version…but also happy to hear from others on the matter?
